Netflix’s Squid Game Infringes 2009 Hindi-Language Film “Luck”

Sep 13, 2024

Today, Kirsch & Niehaus filed a lawsuit for copyright infringement against Netflix, Inc. in federal district court for the Southern District of New York on behalf of our client, Soham P. Shah.  Mr. Shah, a successful author, screenwriter, and film director wrote the story and screenplay for, and directed, the Hindi-language Film “Luck” released worldwide in 2009. Netflix’s 2021 blockbuster Korean-language series Squid Game is a rip-off of Luck. Netflix has not only touted almost a billion dollars in value growth from the release of Squid Games in 2021, but has also exploited the infringing property further with derivative works such as the announced sequel seasons 2 and 3, the off-shoots Squid Game: The Challenge, Squid Game: The Trial, Squid Game: The Experience, and untold offerings of Squid Game branded merchandise available through the Netflix store. Mr. Shah seeks a permanent injunction and actual damages for the infringement of his story and screenplay as well as for his rights in the Luck film.
